Los Angeles Disability Benefits

Disability Insurance Benefits (DIB) are granted to disabled persons unable to perform substantial work (earning more than $900 monthly).  The disabling condition must have existed or be expected to exist for at least one year.

Eligibility for a Los Angeles disability benefit requires a sufficient earning history and insured Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) contributions.  The benefit amount is also based on earning history and FICA payroll contributions made. 

Disabled Adult Child (DAC) is a disability benefit in Los Angles for disabled adult children of deceased or disabled parents.  The claimant must show a physical or mental impairment that prevents substantial work and a condition that existed or is expected to exist for at least one year.  Other criteria include:

- Adult child of a parent currently receiving disability benefits
- Adult child of a deceased parent who was insured for eligibility of disability insurance benefits
- Adult child did not work and make substantial earnings for extended period at any point after turning 22

An adult child already receiving SSI benefits may receive higher Los Angeles disability benefits based on his/her parent’s earning record.
 
Disabled Widow's/Widower's Benefits (DWB): Disabled widows/widowers aged 50 or older may be eligible based on their spouse’s Social Security.  Former spouses may also be eligible if qualified.  For DWB eligibility, you must provide:

- Proof of relationship such as marriage certificate
- Spouse’s death certificate 

Medicare/Medi-Cal: Once determined disabled and entitled to Social Security disability benefits, a claimant is also eligible for Medicare/Medi-Cal coverage.  If qualified for DIB, DAC, or DWB, you may also qualify for Medicare.

Medi-Cal is a California state medical coverage program for low income citizens with few resources.  Each state determines its own eligibility rules for their Medicaid program.  Medicaid requires no waiting period, and approval for SSI usually means Medicaid qualification.
